Shingles is a painful skin condition caused by the varicella-zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. You can only get shingles if you have had chickenpox. Shingles presents as a painful rash on one side of the body. The first signs are stings and burns along a nerve pathway. After a few days, blisters and painful rashes appear. It can be very painful. The virus passes on it own after a week or so, but the pain can last a little longer.
Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent shingles. The chickenpox virus lies dormant in the body until - potentially - one day it is reactivated. The risk of getting shingles increases with age and especially for people with weakened immune systems.
