Ouch, did an abscess cause pain? Does the boil feel red, hard, warm, and is it tender?
An abscess - also called a furuncle or boil - can occur anywhere on the body and is caused by an accumulation of bacteria on or in the skin.
The soap and barrier cream help keep the skin clean and protected and can be used for the daily care of boils on the body.
How to use the products for care of skin boils
Good hygiene is important to avoid bacteria that accumulate and develop into boils and abscesses.
Keep skin clean and protected where there is a particular risk of developing boils, or where you already have one or more. Wash with the body soap daily – be gentle on the skin area with boils as they tend to be both sore and irritated.
You can reduce the risk of developing abscesses if you use the body wash daily. If you already have an abscess, it is important to keep the skin clean and free from bacteria to avoid further skin problems when the boil bursts.
If you are in much pain, or if the abscess does not improve within a few weeks, we recommend that you seek medical attention.
Keep exposed skin areas protected from the formation of boils by applying the barrier cream daily. The barrier cream forms a protective layer on the skin that keeps bacteria from settling and possibly develop into inflammation and abscesses.
Apply a thin layer of Rescue Cream to the skin you want to protect. You might want to repeat the application during the day if you find it necessary. You can also apply the cream to an existing boil to keep it protected from external factors that can cause further irritation and soreness.
Abscesses can occur with both men and women, anywhere on the body, and at any age.
What is an abscess?
An abscess can be very tender and painful but fortunately it is quite harmless. Usually, an abscess will disappear on its own within a week or two. During that time, it is important to keep skin clean to avoid bacteria in the boil when it bursts.
If the abscess does not disappear on its own, or if the condition worsens, it is important that you see a doctor for proper treatment and guidance.
Abscesses occur due to inflammation in the skin that is usually caused by bacteria. Typically, a boil will feel warm, tender, and the skin will swell and maybe turn red. Boils often hurt, and since they typically develop in skin folds or other skin areas with friction, it can be difficult – or maybe even impossible - to avoid or reduce the pain.
If you are in a lot of pain or if the abscess does not improve, you should see a doctor to have it removed.
How do boils develop?
Abscesses occur because of bacteria that settle in the skin’s pores. If the bacteria penetrate the skin, it can cause inflammation, which might develop into boils or abscesses.
Bacteria can, for example, penetrate the skin if you are affected by eczema, and the skin barrier is broken and has tears, wounds, or fissures in the skin, e.g., due to dry skin.
Simple rubbing – e.g., between skin folds or due to tight clothing – can also be enough for boils to develop. Therefore, keep the skin protected from friction by using a barrier cream on the skin areas with a tendency to develop intertrigo, red, and sore skin.
The barrier cream forms a protective layer on the skin to avoid the friction that causes damaged, red, and irritated skin. The barrier cream can also be applied (gently) to existing boils to keep them protected from bacteria and external irritations.
We always recommend that you see a doctor if the abscess does not burst on its own or if you are constantly suffering from the problem. The doctor can also help if the boil needs to be removed.
